On 23 October, the National University ‘Odessa Maritime Academy’ hosted the second lecture on maritime incidents, delivered by Artem Volkov, Head of Maritime Law Practice at the ‘ANK’ Law Firm, arbitrator at the International Arbitration Centre (MAC) under the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and barrister. The lecture was organised with the support of the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (Copenhagen), whose partner in Ukraine is the law firm ‘ANK’.
The lecture covered the main types of maritime incidents, the fundamental international conventions and rules applicable in the event of a general average, the salvage of a sunken vessel’s wreckage, during rescue operations, oil and petroleum product spills, the procedure for investigating maritime accidents, and other important aspects that will be useful to future captains. In addition, Artem Volkov discussed both well-known Ukrainian maritime accidents (the salvage of the tanker ‘DELFI’, the attack on the dry cargo ships ‘GOLDEN LEO’ and ‘VICTRESS’ during martial law), as well as maritime incidents on a global scale, such as the ‘Costa Concordia’ cruise ship disaster in January 2012 or the blockage of the Suez Canal by the container ship ‘EVER GIVEN’ in March 2021.
The next lecture, dedicated to corruption challenges in ports, will take place in November.
The Maritime Anti-Corruption Association, in collaboration with its local partner in Ukraine – the law firm ‘ANK’ – has launched a series of lectures for cadets at the National University ‘Odessa Maritime Academy’. This initiative was launched as part of the implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation signed between the Academy and MACN in June 2026.
